Eastfield Primary School were given a tour of the Stadium last week. During the tour they had to answer questions on a quiz sheet and were given points for the correct answers. Using the information gathered they then scripted and recorded a ‘Radio Advert’ to promote the ground.

Blackthorn Primary had a session on Cricket Equipment this week. We started with a maths co-ordinates game based on a cricket pitch and then after watching a short DVD looked at real equipment that the cricketers wear. They even got a chance to try it on! Finally they made a poster on what they had learn’t on the Apple Macs.

Week 1 is a getting to know each other session. Students from the girls school have started the term off for us by joining in some team building games and making Name Badges which tell us a little something about each of them.

The main challenge of the session was to build a tower out of 10 sheets of A4 paper, that would not only be tall but stay standing! It was quite a challenge but the girls school rose to the challenge with 2 of the 4 towers standing!

The girls have commented on their first session:

Shannon: I enjoyed the team work

Charlotte: I enjoyed using the laptops and looking forward to going on the field.

Leah: I enjoyed building the Tower

Ellie: I liked making badges and would like to meet Mark Nelson

Our Summer 2009 presentation evening for Playing for Success was held on the very balmy evening of the 2nd July 2009. The young people from Cedar Road, Sunnyside, Parklands, Kingsthorpe Grove, Hardingstone, Denton, Grendon, Yardley Hastings, Cogenhoe and Little Houghton primary schools came with members of their family and friends and representatives from the schools were also invited.

The evening was hosted by Centre Manager Yvonne Tervit who spoke about some of the activities that the young people had been doing over the last term, whilst a short slide show of pictures taken of the children throughout their time at the Study Centre was shown. We would like to thank  players Ryan Cummins and Rob White for helping us out on the evening and speaking a few words of wisdom. The young people were then presented with a medal and certificate and had their photos taken with the players. Special certificates were given to schools for ‘best attendance’, ‘most improved’ etc; and finally Sunyside Primary children were awarded with Tickets for 1 child and 1 adult for this weeks match against the Tourists (Australia), for getting the most points over the term.

After the presentation there was a chance for everyone to speak to the players and staff and look at some of the work the children had produced.

All in all it was a wonderful evening.  Each school has been given a disc with photos from the presentation evening and from the individual sessions and the childrens posters for display.

We are now well into our Summer term of PFS and already the young people attending have done a stadium tour and made a radio advert, learn’t a abit about cricket and the equipment the cricketers wear, some have interviewed a player and some have played cricket on the X-box.

Sunnyside Primary School have now completed four weeks of Playing for Success with the Steelbacks. They have done;
Player interviews and creating a poster
Practiced their circus skills
Name Badges and Tower building
Club shop maths
Designing a stadium.

They have most enjoyed interviewing the player, Ryan Cummins, because he was funny and famous.

Taylor said, “Ryan is interesting. I really liked him because he was a good juggler and he was fun to play with.”

Samantha says that she has learnt how to use the computers.

Oliver is most looking forward to his cricket playing session, which he will get as a reward for good attendance.

Clarice is very excited about the X-box 360 challenge, which the students will complete towards the end of term.

All this and more to come. Keep checking the web for updates!

After months of refurbishments and renovations, the new Steelbacks Study Centre was officially opened by former Northants and England star Allan Lamb. Guests included representatives from the cricket club, County Council and local schools, with Year 5 pupils from Barry Road Primary School coming in for the afternoon to make the day a success.

The children had sessions on cricket equipment and use of the senses in cricket poetry. This was aided by other members of staff from the other 4 study centres around Northants. First team players Monty Panesar, Stephen Peters, David Lucas and David Sales were also on hand to talk to the children and listen to their poetry. Finally coaches from the club gave them a coaching session on the green. All guest and children were also lucky enough to watch some of the County’s LVCC match against Gloucester.

In the new centre we have 3 distinct teaching spaces, with an IT classroom with 15 Apple iMac laptops and supported by full AV equipment ,  a classroom for small group work and a breakout area for team building challenges. we also currently have use of the bowling green infront of the building for outdoor activities, games and coaching. In addition to this we have secured funding from the WRG to create a garden area to the side of the centre. This will be planted with a variety of flowers, shrubs and vegetables and will be used as a curriculum resource to teach young people from the local community about the importance of sustainability to our lifestyles.

We would like to thank all the people involved in making the day a great success, with special thanks to Barry Road Primary for helping us out on the day.
